What's new?
Selected airlines now let you use your phone during their flights – it's just like calling or texting when abroad.
How does it work?
It works through mobile phone transmitters fitted onto the plane. This technology means that mobile phones can now be used on flights (on those services where it is permitted). Don't worry, the service is perfectly safe: the technology prevents any harmful interference with the aircraft’s systems.
How do I use it?
You can use your phone as normal, just like you do when you use your phone abroad. You'll still need to switch your phone off before take-off. But once the aircraft is airborne and has reached cruising height you'll either be informed by the crew, or by a mobile phone light in the panel above your seat, that you can now use your phone.
The service isn't available on all flights yet. For example, at the moment some services may be restricted by the airline, and some airlines are also limiting the number of passengers who use the service at any one time (to reduce cabin noise).
How much does it cost?
As this service is so advanced it's still quite expensive, and you'll be charged the same rates as if you were roaming in the Rest of World zone. That means:

Other things you need to know:
Where you can use it, and what services you can use on board, depends on the airline, not us. We just provide the connection to the service for in-flight roaming.
Outgoing voice calls are in per-minute increments. (For example, a call of 61 seconds will be charged the duration of a two-minute call.)
The service is available to Orange pay monthly and business customers only (at the moment, at least).
